Why do almost all social platforms in math and science deliver less value than arXiv, and why does arXiv itself fall short of the top universities? arXiv is not a loosely structured social network. It is a standardized knowledge publishing and storage platform built around the paper format. The user base and data value of nearly every math and science social site simply cannot match it. Yet arXiv remains only a standardized knowledge publishing and storage platform. It cannot match the value of the leading universities. Those institutions produce talent that goes on to create far greater value than the universities themselves, whether in pure mathematics and science or in technology, engineering, and business.
